Alpha Course
Who For?
The Alpha Course is for anyone… anyone who thinks there may be more to life than meets the eye.
People attend from all backgrounds, religions, and viewpoints. They come to investigate questions about the existence of God, the purpose of life, the afterlife, the claims of Jesus and more. Some people want to get beyond religion and find a relationship with God that really changes life.
Many guests have never been to church, others may have attended church occasionally but feel they have never really understood the basics of the Christian faith. Everyone is welcome.
What is Alpha?
Alpha is an opportunity to explore the meaning of life. It is a 10 week course covering such topics as Who is Jesus? Why am I here? Why did Jesus die? How does God guide us? and Why and How do I pray? Alpha is relaxed, non-threatening, low key, friendly and fun. Alpha can help you to deepen your relationship with the Lord.
What is involved?
A typical Alpha evening generally lasts for 90 minutes. We will start with food, a chance to get to know others, followed by a video teaching for 20 minutes, and then break into small groups to discuss some questions relevant to the teaching where everyone is welcome to contribute their opinion and ask questions. People usually stay in the same small groups for the duration of the course so they can get to know each other, continue discussions and deepen friendships. Participants will each be given an Alpha Manual.
What is the impact of Alpha?
Alpha is a worldwide phenomenon and is endorsed by Church leaders in all the main Christian churches. Alpha is impacting adults, youth, the business community and prisoners in 163 countries with over 42,000 courses running. More than 13 million people have taken this opportunity to explore the meaning of life. In Ireland the number of Alphas increased from 17 in 2005 to 120 in 2009 including one in Mountjoy Prison for 12 prisoners. This Alpha had a profound impact on these men, e.g. Richard and Patrick shared how knowing Jesus changed their lives in a feature article published in a national newspaper. Richard sums up his experience, ‘I know that I’m forgiven for my past. The hardest thing to do was to forgive myself and I have now done that’.
How has it changed peoples’ lives?
“It has made a big difference on my own faith and I have seen it make a big impact on others. Alpha addresses all the main issues of Christianity in an atmosphere that is non threatening or cringy and people can enjoy.”
John, former Longford Town Club Footballer
“We had an opportunity at Alpha to discuss what we believed in a friendly and relaxed way. No judgements. No pressure. I really liked it. It was great.”
Fiona, student from Dublin
“The course is very open minded. What was refreshing was being in an environment where you could freely speak your mind. I particularly enjoyed the open discussions following each lesson. The relaxed approach encourages you to be totally honest, to ask or question everything without feeling embarrassment or persecution.”
Andy, Dublin
“I found it en lighting, a worthwhile experience for anyone searching for answers in the current climate. The purpose of life explained clearly.”
John, Bray
